Director, Business Development & Strategy at WaterAid Nigeria

Around 45,000 children under the age of five in Nigeria die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by the nation’s poor levels of access to water, sanitation and hygiene. Around 31% of the Nigerian population do not have access to safe water- that’s nearly 58 million people; while 71% of Nigeria’s population lacks access to basic sanitation, that’s over 130 million people without a toilet! This is a crisis that calls for urgent action if we are to ensure universal access -access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services for everyone everywhere in Nigeria by 2030.

WaterAid Nigeria has recently agreed a 5 year strategy and is restructuring for more effectiveness in responding to the needs in the country context. We are expanding the scale and scope of our work over the coming years with a view to supporting and catalysing government efforts to deliver the SDGs and especially Goal 6.

We seek a high calibre of professionals to play leading roles in our mission to transform lives with safe water, sanitation and hygiene in the world’s poorest communities:

Position: Director, Business Development & Strategy

Working with the Business Development & Strategy Directorate of WaterAid Nigeria in Abuja, this senior management role has oversight for business development and for raising and managing funds from a diversified mix of private and public sources including mass engagement, grant making private foundations and bilateral /multilateral donors. This role will also be responsible for our communications and campaign activities to achieve influencing and fundraising and for assuring linkages between strategy and activities. Accountability for effective country programme (CP) business planning; forecasting; thematic reviews; research and programme monitoring, evaluation and learning reside with the Director, Business Development & Strategy.

Key responsibilities of the Director, Business Development & Strategy include:

  • Lead the Senior Management Team (SMT) members to support the development and implementation of the country programme fundraising strategy; develop the short-term and long-term fundraising strategy and plan required to deliver WaterAid Nigeria’s country strategy.
  • Lead all funding proposal development and contract processes in WaterAid Nigeria. Anchor funding proposal development activities, including contributions and inputs of the CP programme, finance, people teams as well as WAWA and OK departments to delivering grant proposals and budgets of the highest quality. Propose, seek inputs and negotiate funding contracts terms and agreements which protect WaterAid Nigeria with donors and ensure WaterAid Nigeria’s capacity to meet contractual requirements.
  • Accountable for a coordinated monitoring of strategy implementation; conduct of strategy reviews and evaluations (periodic and midterm strategy reviews; Country Programme Evaluations etc.) and for tracking the implementation of actions plans agreed from strategy reviews and evaluations
  • Advocate and promote cohesion and synergy between fundraising, communications & campaigns and service delivery elements of WaterAid Nigeria’s activities.

Qualification & Experience

  • To be successful in the Director of Business Development & Strategy role, you must have a graduate or Masters level degree and possess a minimum of ten (10) years post-graduation work experience.
  • At least three (3) of these years of experience should be in senior level position with experience and responsibility for managing projects funded by key multilateral and bilateral donors including DFiD, USAID and EU.
  • The candidate must have proven experience developing and reviewing grant funding proposals with evidence of managing end to end process from proposal development to new grant project start up and with responsibility for managing strategy development or programme monitoring & evaluation or fundraising activities in a similar organisation.
